What would you do if you meet someone better after falling in love?
What would you do if you meet someone better after falling in love?
This seems to be a situation that can easily happen, and everyone has their own take on it. Long ago, Socrates offered us an answer to this very question.
As the story goes, Socrates’ students asked him what true love really was. Instead of giving a direct reply, he led his students to a wheat‑field. He told them to walk through the field and pick the largest ear of wheat they could find — yet they could only move forward and never turn back.
The students walked on, eyes scanning the wheat. They kept suspecting an even bigger ear might lie ahead. By the time they reached the end of the field, many left full of regret, while others walked away with empty hands, having picked nothing at all.
This journey through the wheat‑field mirrors how we choose our partners in love. We get to pick only one, and there is no going back. Even when you have met someone who feels like the best match so far, you may still wonder if someone better waits ahead, and hold back from committing whole‑heartedly.
Later, you may realize those supposedly better “ears of wheat” are no match for the one you first came across. By then, if you try to go back for the person you once had, you will find the chance is long gone.
No one can predict the future, and every choice we make is irreversible. Confronting our inner greed and fear becomes one of our greatest challenges.
Here lies love’s great paradox: there is no perfectly flawless ear of wheat. You will never know whether what you missed was the best, nor whether what you already have is truly the right fit.
The real solution is not to chase the biggest ear of wheat. It is to stop comparing what you hold in front of you against the fantasy of something supposedly better.
Mature love is not about picking the perfect person. It is about committing to your choice, growing side by side, and nurturing your “ear of wheat” together.
Only when you stop obsessing over whether someone better might come along can you experience deeper love.
If you already have someone you care deeply about, hold tight to this beloved ear of wheat you have picked, and walk through the rest of the wheat‑field with your eyes closed.
